Intermediate shafts are used in multi-stage reduction gearboxes to achieve speed reduction through several stages, allowing for smaller gear wheels due to high transmission ratios. The intermediate shaft, which is mounted in the gearbox housing, meshes with two gears of different sizes in the first and second transmission stage.
