Gear transmissions are often used where large torques need to be transmitted directly and efficiently, but they can only bridge a limited shaft distance. To address this, an intermediate gear can be used. Typically, smaller than the final drive gear, the intermediate gear is connected to the intermediate shaft through splines or a press fit.
